Sludge Metal is a grim fusion of doom metal and hardcore punk. Its sound is built on "dirty" guitar riffs with down-tuned tuning, heavy distortion, and abrupt transitions from slow, almost suffocating rhythms to explosive hardcore sections. The vocals range from desperate screaming and growling to, less commonly, muffled clean singing. The lyrics delve into themes of social decay, environmental disasters, drug addiction, and existential despair. Sludge Metal retains a rebellious aesthetic, enriched with bluesy notes of Southern rock and industrial overdrive.
